Choosing cross-country ski poles

Pole Choice – What to Consider?

The choice of pole primarily depends on your experience and ambition with skiing.

For Beginners

For beginners, 100% carbon fiber poles are not recommended. These are very light and stiff, but also delicate – they can easily break in a fall, even if it doesn't look particularly dramatic.

For Ambitious Skiers

For those aiming for regular training, technique improvement, or a long-distance race like Vasaloppet, it is worthwhile to invest in a pole with low weight and high stiffness. A pole segment around 55 g/m (the same segment as the most expensive poles on the market) is a good guideline for an effective pole that helps you develop.

Technical Innovations vs. Reality

Manufacturers often highlight technical innovations such as aerodynamic shapes and new manufacturing methods. In practice, these are often minor improvements rather than revolutionary differences.

Perceived difference in skiing primarily comes from:

  • Weight
  • Balance
  • Stiffness

...not from marketing.

Our Poles – Directly from the Factory

The poles from langdskidstavar.se come directly from factories that produce for well-known brands. These factories are, of course, at the forefront when it comes to manufacturing quality and innovation, as they develop the products themselves before they receive a brand name.

Pole Shaft

The pole shaft has an end diameter of 9/16 mm, as this is the standard most manufacturers use in their premium poles. The shafts have low weight with high stiffness and durability – perfect for those who want optimal responsiveness in every pole stroke.

55 g/m – Competition and Training

Our standard shaft with a professional feel and stiffness. Perfect balance between weight and durability.

51 g/m – The Extreme Shaft

You can also choose a 51 g/m shaft – the lightest that can be manufactured today while maintaining function. According to the laws of physics, they become slightly less stiff, but for lighter skiers or those who prioritize minimal weight over maximum stiffness, it is an excellent choice. NOTE! Extremely fragile, for the experienced.

Basket System

NOTE! Not "TBS" basket system, but Quick Release which is a better and more affordable system.

I believe a "pole package" should at least include 2 pairs of basket sizes. Therefore, 2 pairs are included to choose from these sizes:

  • 30mm (roller ski ferrule)
  • 40mm, 50mm and 60mm (snow baskets)

Assembly Tips

Roughen the surface before gluing

Apply hot glue

Mounting the control strap

Melt the hot glue with a heat gun

Pole Length

Classic style: Your height + 2( × 0.83)
Skate/freestyle: Your height × 0.89 (approx. to chin/mouth)
Roller skis: Same as for classic or skate
